Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, in collaboration with Buro Happold and Max Fordham, undertook the design, fabrication and assembly of the new HIV and Malaria treatment centre for Mzuzu University in Malawi. The project, which was initiated by FCBS architect Ron Nkomba, aimed to demonstrate sustainable progressive construction techniques focussing specifically on the innovation of a new lime stabilised earth compacted brick, and a modular softwood frame.

Using local materials, the system is capable of being fabricated and erected by a small team of artisans without the need for cranes or scaffolding. Alongside the programmatic and cultural requirements of the brief, the building provides an environmentally sensitive approach that reduces the use of hardwoods and cement, and injects expenditure into the local economy.

The entire project was built within the working budget of £10,000, funded by FCBS, with all design and construction time given on a voluntary basis.
